A letter from the non-partisan Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) sheds some light on the consequences outlined in Pelosi's new health care proposal for those who choose NOT to comply with its new individual mandate--including up to a $250,000 fine and 5 years in jail:
Key excerpts from the JCT letter appear below (courtesy Ways & Means Ranking Member Dave Camp, R-MI):
“H.R. 3962 provides that an individual (or a husband and wife in the case of a joint return) who does not, at any time during the taxable year, maintain acceptable health insurance coverage for himself or herself and each of his or her qualifying children is subject to an additional tax.” [page 1] “If the government determines that the taxpayer’s unpaid tax liability results from willful behavior, the following penalties could apply…” [page 2] Criminal penalties Prosecution is authorized under the Code for a variety of offenses. Depending on the level of the noncompliance, the following penalties could apply to an individual:
• Section 7203 – misdemeanor willful failure to pay is punishable by a fine of up to $25,000 and/or imprisonment of up to one year.
• Section 7201 – felony willful evasion is punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment of up to five years.” [page 3]
Rep. Camp reports that according to the CBO, the "lowest cost family non-group plan under the Speaker's bill would cost $15,000 in 2016.

CBO: PelosiCare Cost Estimate = $3 Trillion Over 10 Years

The following info is a statement from Senator Gregg (R-NH), the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee:
Senator Gregg: Updated CBO Estimate of House Bill Pulls Back the Curtain on Majority’s Intent to Grow Government by $3 Trillion. Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH), ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee today commented on the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) more detailed cost estimate of the manager’s amendment to the House health reform bill. Senator Gregg stated, “The CBO estimate released last night finally sheds light on the smoke and mirrors game the majority has been playing with the cost of their health care reform proposal. Over the first 10 years, this legislation builds in gross new spending of $1.7 trillion – and most of the new spending doesn’t even start until 2014. Once that spending is fully phased in, the House Democratic bill rings up at more than $3 trillion over ten years. “Additionally, this bill cuts critical Medicare and Medicaid funding by $628 billion, accounts for nearly $1.2 trillion in tax and fee increases and will explode the scope of government by putting the nation’s health care system in the hands of Washington bureaucrats. The $3 trillion price tag defies common sense – we simply cannot add all this new spending to the government rolls and claim to control the deficit. “If we continue to pile more and more debt on the next generation, they will never be able to get out from under it. The health care system needs reform, but this massive expansion of government, financed by our children and grandchildren, is the wrong way to proceed.”

As Garrett points out below, Robert A. George makes some good points in discussing President Obama's incredibly dismissive initial reaction to yesterday's shootings at Fort Hood.
Today, the President tried it again. Sadly, the results weren't much better. Speaking this morning, President Obama's main message to an American public reeling from this act of mass murder was an admoninition to avoid "jumping to conclusions before we have all the facts."
Now, it's refreshing to see how much the President has learned since his own display of "jumping to conclusions" last summer, when the matter concerned his friend, Professor Gates, and Gates' allegations of racism against a white police officer.
But with the warning about "jumping to conclusions" this morning, we all know what Obama's really saying here: Look, you bigots, don't start making the ugly assumptions you're prone to making, just because the killer was Muslim.
It's all very reminiscent of a few of the nitwits in the wake of 9/11, whose primary (and unjustified) concern seemed to be that a bunch of haters would immediately start lynching anyone of Arab descent in this county in response to the attacks on America.
And it's remarkable how little insight this President has about the true nature of the country he leads, does he?

Obama's Frightening Insensitivity Following Shooting

...from a fantastic (if scathing) piece on President Obama's press conference on the Fort Hood attack, in which he felt it somehow appropriate to give a "shout out" and go on and on for three minutes before addressing the tragedy...
"Anyone at home aware of the major news story of the previous hours had to have been stunned. An incident like this requires a scrapping of the early light banter. The president should apologize for the tone of his remarks, explain what has happened, express sympathy for those slain and appeal for calm and patience until all the facts are in. That's the least that should occur."
Thank you, Robert George, for writing this. I couldn't agree with you more.
Click here to read the full piece. I highly recommend it.

In response to yesterday's shooting at Fort Hood, President Obama had the following to say regarding public suspicions:
"We don't know all the answers yet. And I would caution against jumping to conclusions until we have all the facts."
Barack Obama sure has come a long way since July when he had the following to say regarding the arrest of his friend, Harvard Professor Henry Gates:
"I don’t know – not having been there and not seeing all the facts – what role race played in that, but I think it’s fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry; number two that he Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home."
Well done, Mr. President!

The Truth Behind Today’s Job Numbers

Earlier today I blogged about the high level of unemployment and the failure of the President’s stimulus package to provide the stimulative effects promised by the administration. However, we must take a hard look at what these numbers really mean. First, it is important to make a distinction between the number released earlier today and what is happening in reality. Don’t let the 10.2% figure fool you. Out in the real world, unemployment is 17.5%. The figure released by the Department of Labor does not include those individuals who have given up on finding work or those who are underemployed, such as individuals working part time but looking for full-time work. Meanwhile, back in D.C., Nancy Pelosi and President Obama are intent on passing legislation on global warming and health care which analysis has shown will kill jobs and only exacerbate our current economic woes. When roughly 1/5th of the American population is unemployed or unable to find full-time work, why is the President and Speaker intent of making work harder to find for even more Americans?

The Office of the Republican Whip has just published this comprehensive list of House Representatives who may still be on the fence about voting for or against Pelosi's health care overhaul. Where does your representative stand? Contact them through the Capitol Switchboard @ 202-224-2131.
As of today, at least 69 Democrats have expressed opposition to the Speaker’s health care bill. As the bill comes to the House floor, how many Democrats will stand up and vote against a health care bill that raises taxes, cuts benefits to seniors, and spends money that families and small businesses across America cannot afford? Full list after the jump.

More on BPA

In July, I wrote a blog on TownHall.com about Bisphenol A (BPA) in which I brought to your attention the behavior of many major media outlets with regard to their accusations against BPA, which is a chemical used to make lightweight, versatile, durable, high-performance plastics. In that piece I identified that contrary to those that claim that BPA is dangerous and hazardous to all, new research was telling an opposite story: … After years of hand-wringing, biased media reports and witch hunts about BPA -- a new Statistical Assessment Service (STATS) report out of George Mason University (a non profit, non partisan group) has found that the risks were misleading and caused unnecessary public anxiety. As the report noted, "A handful of scientists and environmental activist groups claim that bisphenol A is the biological equivalent of global warming, and its presence in plastic bottles and can linings is endangering “millions of babies.” Their message – and their accusation that the Food and Drug Administration has been swayed by industry-sponsored studies and has ignored vital scientific evidence – has led Congress to ask the agency to re-examine the safety of the chemical. A decision is expected by the end of the summer." ... Of course, if someone claims your product harms babies, they don't really need to prove it. The accusation is so incendiary that the mere suggestion could bankrupt most companies -- which, of course, is the point if you are trying to sell a "safer" plastic product. In short, it's a "scare racket"… And yet, many popular media outlets continue to baselessly attack BPA as a dangerous and unsafe chemical.

A CAN’T MISS FORMULA FOR VICTORY
|

The recent GOP triumphs in gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey provide a resounding rebuttal to those who claim Republicans can win simply by mobilizing their conservative base. In New Jersey, self-described conservatives amounted to just 30 percent of the electorate and in Virginia only 39 percent. Obviously, if the two candidates appealed solely to those who considered themselves conservative, they would have lost in twin landslides. Instead, they reached out to self-identified moderates—the biggest group in both states. Chris Christie, newly elected Republican governor of New Jersey got 48 percent of the moderate vote, and Bob McDonnell, the big winner in Virginia, got 46 percent of the mod squad. When Republican candidates rally their fellow conservatives, and supplement those votes by at least splitting those who see themselves as moderate, it’s a can’t-miss formula for victory.
