A hearing is under way in Detroit on Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's request for freedom after he spent the night in one-man jail cell for an alleged bond violation.

Kilpatrick's lawyers want Wayne County Circuit Judge Thomas Jackson to reconsider a lower court order that landed him behind bars Thursday.

District Judge Ronald Giles ordered Kilpatrick to be locked up for making a trip to Canada on city business last month without informing the court in advance. That led the county prosecutor's office to request Kilpatrick be punished. Giles agreed and ordered the mayor to jail.
