you can
most of the eurpoeans that are being referred to as multilingual are not. i live in scotland, travel a bit in euope and you would be suprised at how many english only speak english, french... french and so on. not even english, it isn't taught as a matter of course all over europe and most never speak a drop. they aren't that enlightened. there are many a college professor and scientist who ae far more educated than animalgirl who are monolingual. knowing a lot of languages does not make you educated. do be confused.

europe smaller than us
you have to speak several languages in europe to get around, the countries hate each other so are not about to teach multiple languages in their schools (barring the dutch). i went to spain and i tried to speak spanish to the folks there and all they wanted was to try their english out on me, so not much spanish got spoken. america is big, english is the language of choice for all who do not live in the cities, city folk are so far up their own arses that they cannot recognise this as most of them have never strayed outside of their own neighborhoods, unless to go to france.

be an educated person if you do not speak more than one language. You cannot fully understand language if you only speak one (and it may be a key reason Americans speak English so badly). I am embarrassed at how proud of their ignorance many Americans are. We cannot stay at the top of the world if so many of our people want to revel in their own lack of education.
